Our company was founded on the belief that good business can be good for you, your health and our planet. Business can be a massive instrument of positive change. The pervasiveness of poorly built and wasteful products inspired us to make a difference. Ruinel is a business built on quality and sustainability, employing bright and forward looking people, providing the highest quality products sourced from the most unique and ethical producers across the globe.

Our Name

Ruinel is a portmanteau of three tenets - Rugged, International and Elegant - three concepts that are interwoven into our style and brand.

• Rugged (rugˊid), adj. tough, strong, resilient - tried, true and time tested.
• International (inˊtər nashˊə nəl), adj. global, cultured, urbane - well travelled and refined.
• Elegant (elˊə gənt), adj. chic, pure, beautiful - simple and genuine sophistication.

Adjectives describing an implied noun - our brand, our style, our products. Combined they form a new style and concept - “rugged international elegance”.

Our Story

Ruinel is the product of an insatiable desire to solve problems. The antithesis of “all things home” - a simplified decorating experience, solving the problems caused by the thousands of sites that “hawk” their goods, burden and overwhelm consumers with random choices and repetition.

Ruinel’s concept, style and design choices were inspired by a life of travelling and learning - including summers spent exploring and sailing the Mediterranean. Here I grew to love the elegant simplicity of the architecture and great quality of craftsmanship with no detail overlooked. Every village, every piece of decor tells the stories of the artists and communities that have spent centuries perfecting them.

My passion for design is born from my family background in building, architecture and design.

Growing up I was fortunate to travel and learn about many different cultures. This included volunteering with communities in Nicaragua, seeing the struggles of Native Americans while canoeing Northern Canada and witnessing the lives of the Bedouin tribes in North Africa. These experiences have made me appreciate the positive impact access to electricity and good lighting can have on families and communities. In all we do at Ruinel, we consider our impact on every stakeholder. This is also the reason we contribute a portion of each sale to helping undeserved communities gain better access to electricity.
